As you probably know, we hold a large land package up in northern Ontario. Meanwhile, as you also probably know, many parts of this package are prospective for a variety of strategic minerals.

Over time, we’re hopeful that we will make one or more big discoveries that will be transformational for our shareholders and the wider Ontario region.

But to make a success in this way, we need not only just to hit economic mineralisation…we also need a broad-ranging social licence over the land we hold.

What does this mean?

Well, it means we’re determined to ensure we have the consent of the First Nations communities located in the areas in which we operate to complete work. It also means we will collaborate with the communities on an ongoing basis while maintaining a due respect for the environment in general.

To cement our values in this area, we recently issued our inaugural Environmental, Social, and Government Statement, which you can find on our website here.

This makes it plain from the outset that ESG has been, and will continue to be, central to everything we do by laying out five “pillars” forming the foundations of our operations:

Guaranteeing good governance and inclusive culture

Let’s take a look at these points in more detail…

Local engagement
Our local relationships and approach to stewardship are among our most important assets–it's why they are at the top of the list. It’s key we act and behave responsibly on the licences we hold, both to preserve their biodiversity and ensure minimal disturbance to ancient and ancestral lands.

This isn’t a question of taking a “soft” approach.

It means our senior management team spending significant time meeting with the individuals whose lives centre around these territories. It means keeping waste and energy consumption to a minimum and ensuring we do not contaminate local water sources in any way. And it means ensuring that sites are completely rehabilitated once we leave an area.

Alongside this, we also endeavour to maintain close contact and strong relations with local academic communities. A two-way relationship here can be useful for everyone involved when it comes to data sharing and innovation.

With regard to energy, our approach has two prongs.

First, as readers will no doubt be aware, we are actively searching for several energy metals that are crucial to enabling the global move away from fossil fuels entirely. Second, we are deliberately using new low-carbon exploration techniques such as AI and remote sensing. These keep our greenhouse gas emissions to the absolute minimum.

While all this is going on, we will continue to uphold the highest safety standards, adhering to best practices under both the Canadian and British systems, as well as other applicable codes and guidelines.

Finally, our governance, as you’ve a right to expect, will also continue to meet the highest possible standards, and all our staff will be trained in best practice.  As part of this, we are endeavouring to develop as inclusive a culture as possible inside the company.

All-in-all, the feeling is that when all these ESG factors are added up, it ought to create as highly motivated and creative a team as could possibly be envisaged.  All the better to achieve the kinds of results we’re all looking for!

Putting a focus on our ESG commitments
